Where it all began:
Born from a desire to create his own furniture Matthew’s journey with woodworking has been a long one, but it didn’t really begin there. In truth, it began many years before that, working with his Father on projects around the house and watching his Grandfather and Uncle create beautiful things with their own hands as a child. The first steps of his own journey may have been taken in the early 2000’s but the seeds had been planted long ago.
The Mission:
Black Rabbit Craft Works evolved out of a desire to bring together the disparate areas of study that have influenced Matthew’s art. It is a synthesis of his woodworking journey, his exploration of the history of the craft, as well as, the hidden insights of teachers both past and present. Using techniques and skills gathered over many years Black Rabbit Craft Works seeks to showcase the hidden beauty of the natural world. Primarily focused on decorative and functional pieces for the home, other projects may appear from time to time. All built around, and having at their core, a focus on revealing the truth and beauty within.
The Work:
For years Matthew has studied the art of woodworking both formally and informally. Having taken classes with some of the most talented craftsmen in the South East, and, thanks to this digital age, some of the greatest woodworkers teaching to date. His works are also influenced by other areas of study that Matthew has focused on. Each piece is created with the utmost care and precision, an eye toward the natural beauty within the wood, and the place and time within which it is created. Matthew always seeks to work with the most natural materials available, the most ethically harvested sources at hand, and in concert with the forces at play within and without.
